More than 1,800 pieces of artwork by Chandler sixthgraders will be displayed at libraries this month.
The sixth-grade district art fair will take place at Chandler’s downtown and Hamilton libraries.
The works were created by students as part of the Chandler Unified School District’s art masterpiece program. The program uses volunteers who visit schools each month. They teach kindergartners through sixth-graders about artists and their work, and involve students in hands-on activities.
"We only showcase the sixth-graders’ work because of space, and it’s their last year before they go to junior high," said Mary Lynne Lasure, an art masterpiece program coordinator. "We want them to feel really proud of their work and encourage them to continue their art."
Lynne Paulson, reference desk supervisor at Chandler Downtown Library, said visitors are astonished at how good the students’ artwork is.
"People comment favorably on it," Paulson said. "We are just lucky to have it. It is a win-win for us and the children to see it displayed."
The art program, which for 12 years was at only seven schools, expanded three years ago to the district’s 13 other elementary schools. Program coordinators recruited high school and college students and senior citizens to volunteer.
"We train the individuals, provide materials, lessons, prints and activities," Lasure said. "We stress with volunteers that they don’t need to have a background with art. They just need to be enthusiastic and like working with children."
Despite recruiting efforts, some schools still fall short. "Knox Elementary has only enough volunteers to cover two grades, and the same with San Marcos Elementary," Lasure said. To volunteer, call Lasure or Lauren Majure at (480) 812-7953.
