The Mesa Unified School District’s calendar is up for debate again. Six options — ranging from a modified year-round calendar to a more traditional one — are being considered for the 2007-08 and 2008-09 school years.

The district asks for input every two years.

Parents, educators and staff can attend two forums to tell governing board members which calendar they prefer and why.

In the end, it’s up to board members to decide which calendar is best for the schools, said Mike Cowan, assistant superintendent.

Cowan presented the calendar choices to a parents group Tuesday night.

Kerry Parker, an O’Connor Elementary School parent, said she got the information in advance and informally surveyed several teachers from elementary through high school.

"They like traditional (calendar), but are not so opposed to beginning (earlier) in August," Parker said.

Parker said the teachers she spoke with were especially opposed to calendar options like the modified year-round because teachers "have days they have to make up to get their kids back on track."

Letters are going out to parents and the information will also be posted on the district’s Web site www.mpsaz.org.
