School briefs: Sun Lakes woman wins Lexus in raffle

Sue Dolman of Sun Lakes is the winner of a 2010 Lexus IS 250 C in the 2010 Chandler Education Foundation vehicle raffle.

Dolman’s ticket was drawn from among the approximately 5,000 tickets purchased. Proceeds of raffle benefit programs and students in the Chandler Unified School District.

Seton expansion project set to begin

Chandler’s Seton Catholic High School, will hold a groundbreaking ceremony 2 p.m. Feb. 26 for its new 55,000-square-foot classroom facility. With this building, the current student population of 560 can be expanded to 700 to meet the demand for private, Catholic education in the East Valley, according to a press release.

The three-story building will be located to the west of the chapel and includes a fine arts level, a black box theater with seating for 400 and 16 additional classrooms. It’s being funded through private donations and grants. Information: (480) 963-1900.

Basha Elementary School receives grant

Chandler’s Basha Elementary School is one of five organizations in Arizona to receive a UnitedHealth HEROES grant to develop programs to stop childhood obesity. With the grant, a group of 25 students will choreograph a series of short fitness routines for use in the classroom.

The routines will combine physical and cognitive skills to create fun, high-interest routines. The students will rehearse and perform the routines, as well as create a series of short videos for use by students and teachers.

Education forum on economy is Tuesday

The Arizona Learning First Alliance is hosting regional education coalition forums throughout the state. The East Valley forum will be 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Chandler Unified School District office, 1525 W. Frye Road.

The audience will view a video titled “Education and The Economy in Arizona: Creating the Essential Connections” and then discuss the current economic situation with the state and education.

Mountain View teacher honored by foundation

William Mellyn, a teacher at Mountain View High School, was recently named the Arizona winner for the Siemens Foundation. Each year, the foundation honors the top students and teachers in Advanced Placement science and mathematics courses.

Mesa district board to meet Tuesday

The Mesa Unified School District governing board is scheduled to meet 4 p.m. Tuesday in an executive session, followed by a 7 p.m. regular board meeting where students, volunteers and staff will be honored. The board meets at 549 N. Stapley Drive. Information: (480) 472-0223.

MCC hosting open house for prospective students

Mesa Community College will host an open house 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 3 at 1833 W. Southern Ave. The public can meet faculty, tour new buildings, learn about programs and ask about financial aid opportunities.

Prospective students can enter to win one of six $250 scholarships. A second open house will be 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 4 at the Red Mountain campus, 7110 E. McKellips Road. Information: (480) 461-7230.
