District governing board meets Tuesday

The Queen Creek Unified School District governing board will meet Tuesday at the district office, 20740 S. Ellsworth Road, Queen Creek. The board will have a 4:30 p.m. work-study session and then continue with the 6 p.m. board meeting.

Pro-public education rally at Higley High

The Higley Education Association, parents and community members are hosting a pro-public education rally. The event will be at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Higley High School's amphitheater, 4068 E. Pecos Road, Gilbert.

The rally will cover education issues at the state level and how they have impacted Higley.

Higley Supporters of the Gifted event

Higley Supporters of the Gifted is hosting a night of fun and learning from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday in Centennial Elementary School's multipurpose room, 3507 S. Ranch House Parkway, Gilbert.

Parents can listen to guest speaker Otto Siegel, a master-certified coach and president and founder of Genius Coaching. At the same time, children can enjoy classes such as rocketry, drama and the history of rock and roll.

Celebrate district's100th anniversary

The Higley Unified School District is celebrating its 100th anniversary at the Centennial Carnival from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Higley Elementary and Middle School, 3391 E. Vest Ave., Gilbert.

There will be food, rides, door prizes, music and game booths.

Register for Food Service Worker Test

Higley Unified School District is offering a Food Service Worker Test from 10 a.m. to noon March 27 at the district office, 2935 S. Recker Road, Gilbert. Anyone who handles food, utensils and food-contact surfaces is required to have a food-handler card.

This session is for testing only; no lectures will be given. Participants are expected to study prior to the testing. The study guide can be downloaded at the "Food Service Worker Information" link at

Highland High SchoolJazz Festival

Tickets for the first Highland High School Jazz Festival are now available. Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Bob Mintzer will perform on March 26, and world-renowned trombonist Wycliffe Gordon will perform on March 27 at Highland High School, 4301 E. Guadalupe Road, Gilbert.

A ticket to both concerts is $40; a ticket to one event is $25.

Mintzer and Gordon will also be joined by student performers and the Arizona State University Jazz Band. The high school jazz band that receives the judge's highest award from the festival's day clinics will open the Saturday concert.

Scholarships for seniors in Gilbert

Seniors from Desert Ridge, Gilbert, Highland and Mesquite high schools are encouraged to apply for Gilbert Education Foundation scholarships. Scholarships of $1,000 will be awarded to qualifying seniors who plan to further their education at a college, university or technical school.

Two letters of recommendations are required, as well as a one-page essay answering the question, "I deserve the GEF scholarship because ..."

The deadline is April 7. Applications are available online at
