A fifth-grader at Chandler’s Knox Elementary School died in a single vehicle accident over the weekend near Tucson, according to the Chandler Unified School District. A letter was sent home Tuesday telling Knox families that their children were informed of the death and a crisis team would be on campus, district spokesman Terry Locke said.

The student, Armando Orduno Rojo, 10, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two of Armando’s siblings — also Knox students — were also injured in the crash, according to the district. One remains hospitalized.

“We have had very spotty communication with the family due primarily to circumstances. Someone from the community alerted the school to the situation Monday afternoon. The school received confirmation Monday afternoon from DPS (Arizona Department of Public Safety) and shared the information with students today,” Locke wrote in an email.
