A.J. offers contracts to teachers on notice

The Apache Junction Unified School District has offered contracts to all 33 teachers who received reduction-in-force notices in April, according to district officials. Positions opened up for the teachers due to retirements and resignations.

A.J. OKs budget override vote

The Apache Junction Unified School District governing board recently approved a resolution to call for a maintenance and operation budget override vote on Nov. 3. Voters have turned down to two previous override votes. An override allows homeowners to tax themselves to provide funds above the state-mandated budget for a school district. Seven other Pinal County districts are also seeking an override vote in November, as is Mesa Unified School District.

Kids take part in 'Destination College'

More than 100 sixth-graders from Chandler elementary schools are taking part in Chandler Unified School District's "Destination College" program at Chandler-Gilbert Community College this summer. The students, from Erie, Frye, Galveston, Hartford, Knox and San Marcos elementary schools, are learning about career fields such as nursing and fire science as well as aeronautical engineering and zoology. Students also are attending classes on computing, math, and nutrition. Destination College will culminate with a graduation ceremony and reception on June 25 for students and their families.

Back-to-basics school applications

Applications are still being accepted for Mesa Unified School District's Franklin Junior High School, a new back-to-basics school that will open Aug. 12 at 7038 E. Adobe St. The campus will start with seventh-graders and add grade levels in the future. The curriculum focuses on literacy skills and whole-group instruction in a structured day similar to that of the district's Franklin elementary schools. Gayle Householder will be principal of Franklin Junior High and the adjacent Franklin Northeast Elementary. Information and application materials are available online at http://www2.mpsaz.org/franklinjr.

Teacher of the Year nominees sought

The Arizona Educational Foundation is seeking applications for its 2010 Teacher of the Year Award. The foundation's 2010 Teacher of the Year nomination deadline is Aug. 3; the deadline for applications completed by teachers is Aug. 28. Forms and teacher applications are available at www.azedfoundation.org or by calling (480) 421-9376. Students, parents, graduates, co-workers, principals and superintendents can nominate a teacher of their choosing, or teachers may self-nominate.

E.V. schools earn spots in Newsweek

A handful of East Valley schools were named to Newsweek's top public high schools list for 2009. The top-scoring Arizona school was BASIS Charter School in Tucson, which was No. 5 this year and No. 1 last year. East Valley schools on the list include Chandler High School and Hamilton High School, also in Chandler. Scottsdale's Desert Mountain and Chaparral high schools were also listed.
