Cold Stone Bowl to be held Tuesday

Queen Creek High Bulldogs and Higley High Knights will duke it out from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Cold Stone Bowl.The two football teams' coaches and players will be participating in an ice cream eating contest at the Cold Stone Creamery at Power and Germann roads in Queen Creek.The school with the highest sales during that time wins. Proceeds will benefit the schools' football programs.

Highland High holds Empty Bowl Blues

Highland High School is hosting its annual Empty Bowl Blues from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday in the school's auditorium, 4301 E. Guadalupe Road, Gilbert.The art, drama, and family and consumer science departments are hosts of this evening of art, entertainment and food.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Gilbert Community Action Project to help needy families in the community. Canned food donations will also be accepted. Tickets are $12 for dinner and the show, $5 for the show only. Tickets can be purchased from student participants or at Highland's bookstore.

PTA barbecue set for Thursday

Gilbert Elementary School's Parent Teacher Student Organization is hosting a family barbecue at 6 p.m. Thursday at the school, 175 W. Elliot Road, Gilbert.

Families can buy a hot dog or hamburger, chips, a cookie and a drink for $3.50. Gift baskets created by each classroom will be raffled off with $1 raffle tickets.Tickets will be sold before and after school from Monday to Wednesday and before school on the day of the barbecue. Raffle tickets can also be purchased at the barbecue.

School to hold patriotic event

The Gilbert school district's Superstition Springs Elementary Chorus will perform a patriotic celebration for parents at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the school, 7125 E. Monterey Ave., Mesa.

The students will perform the same program that will be done at Sunland Village East Retirement Center on Veterans Day.

Drama students perform play about magic

Apache Junction High School's Drama Department will perform "Get Witch Quick," a lighthearted look at magic and how it can complicate the lives of ordinary people. The performance times are 7 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in the Performing Arts Center at 2525 S. Ironwood Drive. Tickets cost $5 for students and seniors, $6 for adults. District, Wal-Mart sponsor Christmas benefit

Apache Junction Unified School District transportation employees and Wal-Mart have joined to help "Stuff a Bus" with Christmas goodies for the less fortunate children in the district. The community can help by dropping off donations at school buses located 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at these sites: Peralta Trail Elementary School, 10965 E. Peralta Trail; Thunder Mountain Middle School, 3700 E. 16th Ave.; Four Peaks Elementary, 1785 N. Idaho Road and Apache Junction High, 2525 S. Ironwood Drive.

Board to discuss salaries, report cards

The Chandler Unified School District governing board will meet 5 p.m. Wednesday for study and regular session meetings. The study session will focus look at the salary restructure update. The regular meeting includes a vote on a new kindergarten report card to reflect current state standards and expectations. The meeting will take place at the district office at 1525 W. Frye Road.

Take a tour of traditional academy

Families interested in the Chandler Traditional Academy programs in the Chandler Unified School District can join an upcoming school tour. Traditional schools focus on math, reading and writing. District considering traditional junior high

The Chandler Unified School District will hold information meetings about its plans to open a traditional junior high during the 2009-10 school year. The school will open with sixth- and seventh-grade classes with plans to add eighth grade in the future. Traditional schools focus on math, reading and writing, with some accelerated courses offered. The school will open at Pathways Learning Center north of Chandler High School off Arizona Avenue. The meeting times and dates are 5:30 p.m. Nov. 3, Chandler Traditional Academy/Goodman, 2600 W. District hosts camps for kids

The Chandler Unified School District will host Kids Express camps on Nov. 11, Veterans Day. Hours are 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Registration is under way. The camps will be held at the following elementary schools: Andersen, Basha, Bologna, Fulton, Patterson. Cost is $26 for a full day of care, which includes morning and afternoon snacks and supervised activities. Family discounts are available. Get a tour of prep school

Parents who want to learn more about Hamilton Prep in the Chandler Unified School district can attend an informational session this week. Hamilton Prep offers courses for grades seven through nine with plans to add up to 12th grade by 2011. The meetings will be held at the following schools: 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Chandler Traditional Academy/Liberty, 550 N. Emmett Drive; 7 p.m. Wednesday at CTA/Freedom, 6040 S. Board meets on graduation requirements, calendar

The Tempe Union High School District governing board will hold regular and executive meetings starting at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the governing board room at 500 W. Guadalupe Road. The agenda includes a possible vote on increasing graduation requirements to meet new state standards and making course changes at the high schools.
