The home-schooling community is seeing another hike in participation this year, according to the Maricopa County Education Services Agency.

At this time last year, 9,300 students were registered as being home-schooled, according to the agency. That number has jumped this year to more than 10,100 students as of this week. And the agency is still processing “intent to home-school” affidavits, according to spokeswoman Aprille Slutsky.

Four years ago, there were 8,700 students home-schooled in the county, according to previous media reports. Arizona law requires that families who plan to home-school file a report with their county superintendent’s office.

Arizona Families for Home Education estimates that between 25,000 and 35,000 students are home-schooled in the state.

Just last year, the National Center for Education Statistics found that home schooling was “the fastest growing segment” of education.
