Mesa Counts on College, an initiative funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, announced this week three projects that will receive money to increased post-secondary completion among Mesa’s youth. The selected proposals, which total $19,000 in funding, were submitted by Chicanos Por La Causa, the Mesa Community Action Network and Randy Payne of the Dobson High School’s counseling staff.

Chicanos Por La Causa will use its $7,500 in grant funding to provide tutoring services to youth with reading, math or writing skills below the ninth-grade level. These services will be offered at the Mesa Public Library. Mesa Community Action Network (MesaCAN) was awarded $7,500 to identify potential grant-matching opportunities for Mesa clients who invest in the college tuition-saving program, Fast Tracking the Dream Individual Development Account (IDA), and comply with certain requirements. The Dobson High counseling department will use its $4,000 in grant money to provide resources for seniors and their families to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to apply for post-secondary financial aid. Counselors will hold sessions outside the school day for the convenience of parents.

Mesa Counts on College is a community initiative to increase post-secondary completion among Mesa’s youth. The partners are Mesa Community College, Mesa Unified School District and the City of Mesa.
