Mesa's Franklin East Elementary School was named a 2011 National Blue Ribbon School, for overall academic excellence, by the U.S. Department of Education.
Principal Dawn Carpenter and sixth-grade teacher Felicia Muller will accept the award in November at a Blue Ribbon conference and celebration in Washington, D.C.
"National Blue Ribbon Schools are committed to accelerating student achievement and preparing students for success in college and careers. Their success is an example for others to follow," U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said in a news release.
Franklin East was ranked among Arizona's highest performing schools as measured by Arizona's Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS) and the Stanford 10 test.
Franklin East is a "school of choice" in the Mesa Unified School District for families seeking an alternative to traditional neighborhood schools. Information: http://www.mpsaz.org/franklin/.
