hmm, $2500/year increase. 72,000 students. Thats $180M, minus the free rides for the academic and protected class scholarships. So they are saying they only got $100M from increase? Thats alot of free rides. Looking forward to paying for other people's kids to go to college as part of my kids tuition.

What is happening is this: The universities are seeing more and more students using loans to pay for college, rather than paying out of pocket. They jack up the prices because they have yet to see a drop in enrollment. So, we're at this point where all you hear about is how you can't make it in life without a college degree and a majority of students set out to get one. The colleges know this and know that they can keep raising tuition because students are taking loans anyway, so what's another 20% or 30% onto a loan?

Article 11, Section 6 of the Arizona Constitution says: "The university and all other state educational institutions shall be open to students of both sexes, and the instruction furnished shall be as nearly free as possible." The universities continue to add administrators and build big buildings, while completely disregarding the Constitution. The legislature and the Board of Regents have failed to maintain control. Now, they have done away with most of the scholarship support for outstanding Arizona students. This will increase funding, but it's a sure bet that tuition will not fall. The upshot is that less well-off students will be unable to attend and our best and brightest will go out of state for school, many never to return.
