The 2011 National Assessment of Education Progress results show that Arizona fourth-graders and eighth-graders improving in math and reading, according to Arizona Superintendent of Instruction John Huppenthal. Results were released earlier this week.

Arizona’s fourth-graders showed greater growth since 2009 than their peers in any other state in math.

“Arizona raised its mathematics standards in 2008 and this just goes to show that we are on the right track,” Huppenthal said. “Higher standards plus higher expectations leads to higher academic results.”

Eighth-graders scored higher in 2011 than in 2007 in math. In reading, eighth-graders scored higher in 2011 than in 2007.
