Maricopa Community Colleges Governing Board member Colleen Clark announced Tuesday that she was stepping down.

In explaining her decision in a one-page letter to the board president Randolph Lumm and community college district chancellor Rufus Glasper, the 27-year-old Gilbert woman cited the demands of maintaining full-time employment in a challenging job market.

“Out of respect for the work of the board and the district, it is important that a replacement be named as soon as possible,” she wrote.

Maricopa County Superintendent of Schools Don Covey will appoint a replacement. Clark's term on the board was scheduled to expire in 2012.

Clark spent a month in jail on a DUI charge last year, but made no reference to the conviction in her resignation letter. Authorities say she was arrested in Scottsdale last July with a blood-alcohol level of 0.204 percent, more than double the legal limit. She pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of DUI and spent 30 days in jail.
