Gilbert classes resume Monday

Students in the Gilbert Unified School District return to school from spring break on Monday .

Higley classes resume Tuesday

Higley Unified School District students will return on Tuesday . Monday is a staff professional development day.

Q.C. on spring break until March 29

The Queen Creek Unified School District is still on spring break through March 26. Classes resume March 29.

Gilbert board to meet Tuesday

The Gilbert Unified School District governing board will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the district office, 140 S. Gilbert Road.

Board members will discuss and possibly approve the district’s vision statement, a new name for the district’s alternative learning school, now called Gilbert Learning Center, and changes for the district employees’ benefit trust plan for the upcoming school year. Members will also review policies on student organizations, closed campuses, home-schooled students and graduation requirements.

Combs Traditional Academy meetings

J.O. Combs Unified School District will hold informational meetings about a proposed kindergarten-through-fifth-grade Combs Traditional Academy at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday .

Meetings will be held at the Combs & Gantzel Campus, 37327 N. Gantzel Road, San Tan Valley. The academy, a back-to-basics school, is scheduled to open in August.

Kindergarten open house at Goddard

The Goddard School, 720 E. Warner Road, Gilbert, will host a kindergarten open house and registration day 6:15 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday .

The school will offer a private full-day kindergarten program that uses the Spalding (phonetic) Method for reading and writing, hands-on learning, and several curriculum enhancements including Spanish and yoga.

Jazz Festival next weekend at Highland

The first Highland Jazz Festival will be held Friday and Saturday . The event is being produced by the Highland High band department and Arizona State University. Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Bob Mintzer performs Friday, and Wycliffe Gordon, award-winning trombonist, performs Saturday.

Concerts will take place at Highland High School, 4301 E. Guadalupe Road, Gilbert. Tickets are $25 for one night or $40 for both.

Higley district giving food service test

Higley Unified School District is offering a Food Service Worker Test 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the district office, 2935 S. Recker Road, Gilbert. Anyone who handles food, utensils and food-contact surfaces is required to have a food-handler card.

This session is for testing only; no lectures will be given.

Participants are expected to study prior to the testing. The study guide can be downloaded at the “Food Service Worker Information” link at www.maricopa.gov.

Orchestra needs money for Carnegie

The Mesquite High School Orchestra has raised $95,000 for its March 31 to April 3 trip to New York to perform at Carnegie Hall but still needs to raise an additional $5,000 because of rising travel costs.

The group was selected for the Carnegie high school band and orchestra competition last summer.

A car wash is planned for 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at the 7-Eleven at Elliot and Cooper roads in Gilbert. Diners can also eat at Applebee’s at Cooper and Warner roads in Gilbert on Saturday, and a portion of sales will be donated to the orchestra if the diner tells the server.

Sponsorships are also available. To donate, send a check in the name of Mesquite High Orchestra, to Amber Dudley, c/o Mesquite High School, 500 S. McQueen Road, Gilbert, AZ 85233.
