Many family members and people whose lives were touched by Sylvia Encinas gathered Sunday at an elementary school in Chandler to see it be rededicated to their friend, who was well-known for her kindness.

Hartford Elementary School is now the Hartford Sylvia Encinas Elementary School in honor of Encinas, who died of cancer last week at the age of 62.

Encinas was the former secretary for the school, where she worked for 27 years.

Friends said some in Chandler had nicknamed Encinas “Mother Teresa,” as she was known for going to great lengths to help people in need, including paying their bills.
