my son entered Kindergarten at 5. After a couple of weeks his teacher suggested that we put in in a pre'K class and wait a year for kindergarten At first I was offended (what do you mean, my son is too immature for kindergarten!) but I soon came to see the benefits of waiting until he was a bit more mature. He excelled -all the way through college. Kids only get to be kids for a short time. They need to be mature enough to handle the challenges given to them or they will fail, and that may set the tone for their future. Waiting another year (or more if needed) allows them to know what success feels like, and therein lies the long term benefit .

They should probably come up with a new name, since, as every Star Trek fan knows, a "Redshirt" is basically the one who is going to die.
Surely I'm not the only one who remembers the Redshirt security that would beam down with Captain Kirk, but never beam back up? ;)
