School briefs: Neely Traditional Academy hosts sock drive

Neely Traditional Academy is hosting a sock drive Monday to Friday at the school, 321 W. Juniper Ave., Gilbert. The goal is to collect 2,000 pairs of new socks. The socks will be donated to Shoebox Ministry, which distributes packages to the homeless and working poor. Socks can be dropped off at the front office.

Mesa board plans several meetings

The Mesa Unified School District governing board will meet 5 p.m. Tuesday for an executive session and study session, to be followed by a regular board meeting at 7 p.m.

The study session includes discussion on the employee incentive program and the 403(b) plan document, as well as discussion on the rental policy and fee schedule.

The board is scheduled to vote on the employee incentive program during the regular board meeting. The board meets at 549 N. Stapley Drive, Mesa.

E.V. schools make list of best in U.S.

Several East Valley high schools made the U.S. News and World Report list of Best High Schools for 2009.

All five of Mesa Unified's high schools made the list as did Scottsdale Unified's Arcadia, Chaparral and Desert Mountain highs.

Several charter schools in Arizona also made the list, including Foothills Academy in Scottsdale, Heritage Academy in Mesa, James Madison Preparatory Academy in Tempe and Tempe Preparatory Academy. Schools in Tucson and Flagstaff made the Top 100 list.

Teacher honored with $25K

Jennifer Svans, a second-grade teacher at Mesa's Kerr Elementary School, was honored with a $25,000 Milken Educator Award this week.

The surprise presentation by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne was made at Kerr. Svans has been teaching for nine years, including four years at Kerr.

The awards are given to elementary and secondary school teachers. More than 70 teachers nationwide are being honored this year. The presentations began in 1985.

A.J. board to hold special meeting

The Apache Junction Unified School District governing board has scheduled a special meeting 11 a.m. Tuesday.

The board may go into executive discussion that would cover Superintendent Greg Wyman's annual evaluation.

The board will hold a regular meeting 7 p.m. Tuesday at Mountain Shadows Education Center, 2805 S. Ironwood Drive.

The regular board meeting agenda includes a vote on the retirement of Russell Sgro, principal at Thunder Mountain Middle School and an educator for more than 40 years. The board may discuss approval of a new principal upon Sgro's retirement.

Foundation seeks 2 board members

The Gilbert Education Foundation is seeking two new board members to help support the Gilbert Unified School District. The foundation, a nonprofit organization of community leaders and district employees, works to enhance educational opportunities for Gilbert district students and educators.

Funds raised by the foundation are directed to college scholarships for Gilbert district graduates, social services for families of employees and students in need of emergency financial assistance, and teacher grants to enhance classroom learning.

Reception to honor departing board member

A reception honoring Elaine Morrison, a departing Gilbert Unified School District governing board member, will be 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the district office, 140 S. Gilbert Road, Gilbert.

Morrison will leave the board at the end of the month. She has served since March 2007, and from 1990 to 2002.

Gilbert school boardholds meeting Tuesday

The Gilbert Unified School District governing board will meet 7 p.m. Tuesday at the district office, 140 S. Gilbert Road. The board is expected to discuss new graduation requirements that would require 24 credits for next year's freshmen to graduate, appointing a principal for Campo Verde High School and approving course description books for next year's junior highs and high schools.

Queen Creek schools hold winter concert

The winter concert for Queen Creek High School and Queen Creek Middle School orchestras will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Queen Creek Performing Arts Center, 22149 E. Ocotillo Road.

The free concert, We Need a Little Christmas, will include combined orchestra pieces, strolling strings, a silent auction and displays for holiday shopping in the lobby.
