I thought the charter schools were supposed to spark competition not close viable buildings.

The detrimental effects on GPS junior high schools should cause a laser-like focus on neighboring school districts and their junior high schools. This controversy over closing Gilbert Junior High School, purportedly the GPS administration’s response to known problems at the aging Gilbert Classical Academy campus, can be expected to cost GPS in terms of students leaving the district. We’ve heard justification that the GPS administrative decision to close Gilbert Junior High School won’t cost much. We’ve also heard that this decision will attract out-of-district students, based on the lottery and waiting list for Gilbert Classical Academy. GPS administrators seem to have forgotten the 70 out-of-district students who already attend Gilbert Junior High School and won’t be assigned to a different GPS school; they have a choice.
Actually ALL GPS students have choices, and these short-sighted, ill-conceived executive decisions foreseeably will cascade into ruin for the district. What does GPS plan to offer as competition at the junior high school level? Newly crowded campuses at Greenfield, Highland and Mesquite Junior High Schools, MORE PORTABLES, a principal who retaliated against those who spoke out against his sexcapades, and subsequent ”resignations” of experienced teachers and staff at Highland Junior High. And now this....
