The north East Valley will have a new school district next year. Voters in the Troon and Rio Verde areas decided to form a school district rather than join the Cave Creek Unified School District during Tuesday’s election.

State law requires areas that weren’t part of a school district and had more than 150 students, situations that applied to both Troon and Rio Verde, to either join a school district or form a new one.

Pat Flynn, leader of the group Citizens for a Unified School District, said he didn’t really have an opinion on the voters’ decision to form a new district.

“It’s been two years, and finally the people got a chance to voice their opinion. I’m happy about that,” Flynn said.

Citizens for a Unified School District had proposed forming a new district that, instead of building schools, would enroll students in other districts and pay tuition and transportation costs for students.

Flynn said he wants to meet with Maricopa County Superintendent Sandra Dowling to see how the new district will take shape. It’s Dowling’s job to appoint the district’s first governing board, which will make initial decisions about how the district will operate.

Nedda Shafir, spokeswoman for the Cave Creek district, said Cave Creek would welcome all students whether the new district decided to build schools or bus students elsewhere.

According to the Maricopa County Superintendent’s Office, there are 434 students in the two areas attending neighboring school districts.

The decision doesn’t affect students who live in the area and are already in school or their siblings — state law allows these students to remain in the districts they already attend for the rest of their school career.
