The Center for Practice, Research and Innovation in Mathematics Education is looking for senior citizen volunteers to tutor students in math from kindergarten to fourth grade at elementary schools. Training will be provided.

Volunteers, books sought

Higley Elementary and Middle School will host a Vote Yes for Literacy Night from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the school, 3391 E. Vest Ave., Gilbert. There will be a food court, a book walk, booths and free popcorn for anyone who wears red, white and blue. Volunteers and donations of new and gently used books are needed. Higley candidate forum

The Higley Education Association will host the Higley Unified School District governing board candidate forum from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the small auditorium at the Higley Center for the Performing Arts, 4132 E. Pecos Road, Gilbert. Information: (480) 250-8820.

Gilbert district board meets

The Gilbert Unified School District governing board will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the district office, 140 S. Gilbert Road, Gilbert. The board will discuss and possibly approve naming the district's fifth high school, under construction at 1300 E. Germann Road, Gilbert.

Volleyball, soccer leagues

Adults interested in playing coed volleyball or having their kindergarten to eighth-grade student play soccer can attend a meeting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Chaparral Elementary School, 3380 E. Frye Road, Gilbert, or at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Power Ranch Elementary School, 4351 S. Ranch House Parkway, Gilbert.

The volleyball games will be offered from Nov. 18 to Jan. 20 at Higley Elementary and Middle School, 3391 E. Vest Ave., Gilbert. The cost is $35, and the registration deadline for volleyball is Nov. 11.

Soccer is available from Nov. 8 to Dec. 20 at Power Ranch Elementary. The cost is $75 and Thursday is the registration deadline for soccer.

NotMYkid breakfast

NotMYkid is hosting a men's breakfast from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday and a ladies' lunch from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mesa Country Club, 660 W. Fairway Drive. NotMYkid is a Phoenix-based nonprofit. Parents can learn more about current drug terms, how to talk to your children about drugs and alcohol, and the signs that your child may be under the influence. The cost is $20.

Ice skating social

Chaparral Elementary School's Parent Teacher Organization will host a social from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Polar Ice, 2305 E. Knox Road, Gilbert. The rink will be open just for Chaparral families. The cost is $8, which includes ice skates.

Higley board meets

The Higley Unified School District governing board will have a special board meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the district office, 2935 S. Recker Road, Gilbert.

The board will consider easements at Centennial Elementary School for waterlines and at Recker and Rittenhouse roads for power lines. The board will also discuss and possibly approve a Gilbert property purchase for an easement.

Parent university

Chaparral Elementary School's Parent Teacher Organization is sponsoring a parent university 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday in the school's Learning Resource Center, 3380 E. Frye Road, Gilbert. The university meeting will focus on bullying. School counselor Catherine Hunter will lead the meeting.

Chorus concert

The Gilbert school district's Augusta Ranch Elementary School will host a chorus concert at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the school's multipurpose room, 9430 E. Neville Ave., Mesa.

Fall festival

Playa del Rey Elementary School is hosting its first fall festival 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the school, 550 N. Horne St., Gilbert. There will be trick-or-treat tables, decorated hallways and doors, games and prizes.

Fashion show benefit

The Gilbert school district's Highland Junior High School staff will hold a fashion show to honor the school's former drama teacher, Chuck Day, who recently died from Lou Gehrig's disease. The fashion show will be 8:30 a.m. Friday in the school's gym, 6915 E. Guadalupe Road, Mesa. Donations will help with the family's medical expenses and benefit the Arizona chapter of the ALS Association.

Turkey trot

The fourth annual Desert Ridge Junior High School turkey trot will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at Desert Ridge High School's stadium, 10045 E. Madero Ave., Mesa.

There will be races for students and adults. The pre-registration cost is $10 through Thursday. Day of race entries are $15. Winners will receive frozen turkeys and medals. Entry forms at www.gilbert.k12.az.us/schoolpgs/drjh/drjhinfo.php.
