After a tense tie-breaking round, a team from Weinberg Elementary School reigned as champions in the sixth annual Chandler District Battle of the Books Competition Thursday.
The team, along with second-place St. John Bosco Elementary School and third-place Humphrey Elementary School, will move onto the regional competition May 14 at the Southeast Regional Library in Gilbert.
Andersen, Basha, Goodman, Hull and Sanborn elementary schools also competed. Each school had one three-member team that was quizzed on facts from 12 fiction books.
Weinberg’s sixth-grade team — Kelsy Ayers, 11, Alexandra Garden, 11, Alex Wolf, 13 — said they have been preparing since the beginning of the school year.
The group’s coach, Laurel Sheeley, a fifth-grade teacher, told the girls to just read the books over and over.
"That is the only way to prepare and to memorize the details they need to know for the competition," Sheeley said in the council chambers in the Chandler Downtown Public Library where the competition was held.
Second-place winner St. John Bosco had a different studying technique. The moms of the fifth-grade team members Michaela Bechler, 10, Megan Edmonds, 11, and Troy Harvey, 10, made question packets for each book the kids could study.
The packets had 100 to 250 questions depending on the size of the book.
The Chandler students will compete against Mesa, Scottsdale, Higley, Queen Creek and Gilbert students.
