Additional DNA evidence has enabled Tempe Police to make an arrest in a murder case from 12 years ago, police announced Thursday.

Albert Carreon, 50, was arrested in connection to the murder of Jose "Joey" Gonzalez, 20.

According to a police news release, Gonzalez was last seen alive on Dec. 18, 2000 driving his girlfriend's car. He was later found on Dec. 20, 2000 in the parked car at Fiesta Village Townhouse complex in the 1400 block of West La Jolla in Tempe.

Detectives determined Gonzalez had been shot to death at a different location and then his body was placed in the car and driven to the townhouse complex.

Five years later in 2005, Carreon was identified as a possible suspect, but there wasn't enough evidence to charge him with murder, police said.

Since then, Tempe detectives collected additional evidence, including DNA, that led to the arrest of Carreon, police said. No additional information about evidence was released.
