Mesa Police shot and killed a 49-year-old man in a wheelchair after he reached for a gun, police said.
Sgt. Tony Landato said the suspect was a "known individual" to the department, most recently dealing with drug-related involvements.
Landato said officers were attempting to apprehend the suspect on a felony warrant for drugs near Main Street and Williams Road at 9:30 a.m. Sunday morning in Mesa, Ariz.
The suspect began to fidget with his waistband. Officers determined the suspect was carrying two knives, which were handed over to police.
The suspect then reached for a small handgun he had concealed. Officers and the suspect than began to fight over the weapon, which resulted in another officer firing his weapon at the suspect.
The suspect died at the scene.
Police and detectives are continuing to investigate the area. The public should expect delays in the area for a while.
The name of the victim has not been released.
