Mesa police say a Colorado man left his 3-year-old daughter alone in a vehicle at a Walmart while trying to escape officers after burglarizing a vehicle.

Police were called to In-and-Out Burger, 1636 S. Stapley Drive, about 10:30 p.m. Monday regarding a vehicle burglary in progress. When police arrived, witnesses said they saw a man take items from a vehicle in the parking lot and leave. Officers located the suspect’s car in a Walmart parking lot across the street. Inside the car, officers found a 3-year-old girl and several stolen items.

According to a police report, the suspect, Cory William Evans, 34, knew officers were looking for him so he attempted to walk out of the store parking lot, but was apprehended.

Witnesses identified Evans as the burglary suspect. Officers found property from three vehicle burglaries inside Evans’ vehicle. Police say Evans initially denied burglarizing any vehicles, and stated he is visiting from Colorado.

The child was released to her mother by Child Protective Services. Evans was arrested on charges of suspicion of vehicle burglary and child endangerment.
