Police found a 2-year-old girl dead in her Mesa home and placed her 1-year-old brother into protective care after finding the malnourished, dehydrated children in a sweltering residence.

On Tuesday, police said they received a call Friday evening from the children’s 22-year-old mother, who said her daughter was unconscious, unresponsive and not breathing. The girl was pronounced dead at the home in the 200 block of South 56th Street.

Police said residence’s temperature was elevated, but they found no sign of trauma.

The boy was being released from a hospital to Child Protective Services on Tuesday.

Police are still investigating and will decide on possible criminal charges pending a report from the Medical Examiner’s office.
