Mesa police arrested two men officers say had more than 14 pounds of drugs worth $425,000 in their possession after a traffic stop was conducted on each of the suspects, one of whom had his baby daughter in the back seat of the car.

Police conducted surveillance on the two men and executed a search warrant during a traffic violation in a Mesa neighborhood on Thursday. After officers confiscated drug paraphernalia containing heroin, Cruz Alarcon Lozano and Jorge Gutierez, both 24, each were arrested on suspicion of drug-related offenses. Gutierez also is facing child endangerment charges.

The combined amount of heroin from the two stops after Lozano and Gutierez left a residence in the 4000 block of E. Contessa was 10.2 pounds; during another search related to the traffic stops, four pounds of methamphetamine was seized, according to Mesa police.

The mother of the four-month-old child responded to the traffic stop and picked up her baby, police said.
