Mesa police are looking for a man who assaulted an officer who was trying to detain him Wednesday night.

Police say the search for the man began when there was a call about a suspect panhandling at a Burger King restaurant at Alma School Road and Main Street in west Mesa. When officers arrived, he was gone.

A man matching the description was seen later near 26 S. Beverly. When an officer attempted to detain him, the man struggled and fought with the officer, who struck his head on the ground, requiring medical care.

The suspect is described as a black male, 20 to 25 years old, about 5-foot-9 and weighing 170 to 190 pounds. Prior to the incident, he was seen at a nearby Circle K and a photo of him was made available.

Anyone with information is asked to call (480) 644-2384 or (480) 644-2211.
