A 27-year-old Chandler man who teaches at a Scottsdale charter school has been charged with one count of felony child abuse after police say he knocked the head of his roommate’s 6-year-old daughter into the wall because she woke him up from a nap.
Qikai “Ben” Chen, 27, who teaches at Basis Charter School in Scottsdale and lives with the 6-year-old girl and her father in Chandler, was arrested on Tuesday after Child Protective Services contacted Chandler police about an April 12 incident and interviewed the girl, according to information from Chandler police and court documents.
Staff members at the school noticed that the girl had bruises on her face and contacted CPS, and the first-grader told them that Chen knocked her head on a wall at home that had metal hinges.
Police said Chen admitted to using too much force and when he noticed her forehead was bleeding he gave her first aid.
Arwynn Gilroy, communications director for Basis Educational Group, said that Chen did have a valid Arizona certification and fingerprint clearance card before the incident. Gilroy said Chen's contract was terminated by Basis on April 21.
"We want to make it clear to all of our Basis parents that the incident did not involve any Basis students," Gilroy said. "We're making every effort to communicate what happened to our Basis Scottsdale parents so they can discuss it with their children in the manner they see fit."
