A Gilbert police officer found an African tortoise while patrolling the Power Ranch subdivision Thursday morning, but one tortoise still remains missing.
While on his motorcycle, the officer came across the tortoise walking on the sidewalk in the 3500 East block of South Sterling Court. The tortoise weighed approximately 25 pounds and has since been reunited with its owner. A neighbor, who had reported her own tortoise missing several weeks prior, cared for the other tortoise until it was reunited with its owner.
The neighbor’s missing Sonoran Desert Tortoise is named Harriet and weighs approximately 10 pounds. The pet was originally named for the character Harry Potter, but was subsequently discovered to be female and renamed Harriet.
