Police have identified the body of a man discovered in a trash bin Thursday morning in Tempe as Casey Blackwood, whose death is being investigated as a homicide.

Blackwood, 48, who is believed to be a transient, died from a stab wound, according to information the Tempe Police Department and the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Police began investigating reports of the body about 8 a.m. in the 900 block of South Maple Avenue behind an older vacant home were squatters and transients are known to stay, according to police.

Police do not believe the crime was random and are following several leads, according to Sgt. Steven Carbajal, a Tempe police spokesman.

The Dumpster where the man’s body was found was in the Maple-Ash neighborhood, less than a mile away from Arizona State University.
