Gilbert firefighters were battling a trash and debris fire behind a man’s residence Thursday that caused a large cloud of smoke that could be seen from miles away.
The fire, reported about 2:15 p.m., was behind a residence east of Lindsay Road and north of the Loop 202 San Tan Freeway, according to Brian Ruffenthine, a division chief for the Gilbert Fire Department.
Ruffenthine said there were no structures involved in the fire and that mostly debris and equipment behind the residence was burning.
A cause is not known at this time, and Ruffenthine said that the fire was expected to be under control by late Thursday afternoon.
