GLENDALE — The search of a Phoenix-area landfill for the body of a Glendale girl missing since October has ended without finding her remains.
Glendale police said at a news conference Wednesday that no significant discovery of evidence directly connected to the 5-year-old's death was found.
Hundreds of volunteer police personnel sifted through thousands of tons of trash in a 36,000-square-foot area of the Butterfield Station Landfill in Mobile, south of the Valley, since Feb. 6. Police believe Jhessye Shockley's body was disposed of in a Tempe trash bin days before her mother reported her missing Oct. 11.
The woman was arrested in November on suspicion of child abuse. She was later released from jail and the charge dropped after prosecutors said they wanted to investigate further.
It's unclear whether authorities want to pursue a murder case without the girl's body.
