Authorities say one person has died in a multi-vehicle accident in Mesa.

Mesa police say the suspect vehicle was westbound on Broadway Road when the driver hit the first vehicle at Stapley Drive around 1:30 p.m.

Police Sgt. Efraim Carmona said the victim followed the suspect driver and called police, reporting the driver was hitting curbs and driving onto the sidewalk.

The vehicle then struck two more vehicles between Stapley and Alma School Road, finally hitting a vehicle with five people inside, including adults and children.

One of those people was pronounced deceased at the scene and the other four were taken to local hospitals.

Police said the suspect driver was unresponsive when removed from his vehicle. Carmona said the driver was in his 20s.

Police believe drugs were a factor in the crash but are also checking into whether the driver may have suffered a medical condition.
