With the monsoon in full swing, Mesa police are warning homeowners about bogus contractor scams that pop up along with summer storms.
The con is especially common after a big storm that causes damage. People posing as contractors will knock on doors or approach homeowners in their yard, then say they’ve spotted a problem with your roof, trees, driveway or something else.
The visitors will say they’re a contractor and typically offer to do repairs for a bargain price. They’ll ask for a partial payment upfront of perhaps a few hundred dollars and offer to take the rest of the pay after they finish the job.
But when the phony contractors say they’re leaving to get their equipment, they never come back.
In many cases, there was no need for a repair in the first place.
Police urge homeowners who think they need a repair done to get an expert opinion from a registered, reputable contractor. Also, spend some time checking credentials for yourself.
