Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has raised more than $1 million this year in his bid for a sixth term.
The Republican remains far ahead of his opponents in fundraising and has $4.1 million on hand when his earlier contributions are factored in.
Democrat Paul Penzone’s campaign says it has raised $148,000 this year.
Independent Mike Stauffer’s campaign says it has raised more than $43,000 so far this year and much of the money came from Stauffer himself.
Democrat John Rowan’s campaign reports under $20,000 raised since January.
Arpaio received numerous donations from people living outside Arizona. Nearly all of Penzone’s contributions were made by Arizonans.
Arpaio was the only candidate to file a campaign report as of mid-afternoon Thursday.
Other candidates face a Monday deadline for reporting their fundraising.

Sheriff Joe does not consider himself to be above the law. He considers himself to be the law. I saw that when I witnessed his comments to his attorney when both were before a Federal Judge who was enforcing a concent decree involving Sheriff Joe [by his predecessors] and the County Board of Supervisors on jail over-crowding. Joe's comment was in effect "Who does this judge think he is trying to tell me how to run my jail?" His jail? What an ego centric personality!
Pearce is a Sheriff Joe underling and protoge. They probably think alike. Those who know Russell have characterized him similarly. "Profiling" is a way of life for them. They like to judge but do not like being judged. They put people into hats, "white" for the good guys and "black" for all others who don't think like they do. So give them plenty of rope and watch them hang themselves.
