A fire at a large Phoenix apartment complex prompted the American Red Cross to open a shelter at a nearby high school for displaced residents.
The Phoenix Fire Department says the fire broke out just after 2 a.m. Sunday at the Willow Springs Apartments near 27th Avenue and Indian School Road. Twelve apartments were damaged or otherwise affected by the fire.
Firefighters had to rescue some residents and four children were taken to hospitals to be treated for smoke inhalation. Two adults were also treated for minor injuries.
The Red Cross opened a shelter at Metro Tech High School for at least five families who had nowhere else to go. Volunteers will provide food, clothing, sleeping space and showers as well as medical and emotional support.
