A 33-year-old Mesa man was treated at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn after accidentally shooting himself in the hand.
About 12:04 a.m. on Monday, police responded to a report of a shooting in the 3700 block of East Grove in Mesa and discovered that the man had shot himself in the left hand while handling his friend’s .40 caliber Smith and Wesson handgun. After he slid the slide back on the gun, a round discharged from it and struck him in the hand which he was holding in front of the barrel, according to police.
After police spoke to the injured man, who had a non-life threatening injury, they determined that the shooting was accidental.

I really hope there's more to this story than the pitiful explanation offered here.
Guns don't discharge because you pull the slide back and release it.
It's a good thing he wasn't looking down the barrel when he "slid the slide back on the gun".
That might have helped the gene pool more.
