An armed ex-con who had a warrant out for his arrest was fatally shot by Phoenix police Thursday at an apartment complex.
Police said Luis Alberto Flores, 27, was released in June after serving two years in an Arizona prison for drugs and auto theft and was prohibited from having a gun.
According to police, Flores and a woman knocked on an apartment door about 12:30 a.m. Thursday and demanded to see someone.
When that resident told the couple that he didn't know whom they were seeking, Flores allegedly pulled a gun on him.
Police were called about an assault in progress and saw Flores standing at the front door of the apartment when they arrived.
Officers said Flores lifted the front of his shirt, pulled a handgun out of his waistband and pointed it at them.
Two police officers then shot Flores several times. He was taken to a Phoenix hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The officers weren't injured. Their names haven't been released but police said one of them was a 6-year veteran and the other has been with the department for five years.
