A 29-year-old man Mesa police say was driving while impaired by drugs, was arrested after running a red light and crashing his van into a truck, seriously injuring the driver of the vehicle.

Neale Bradford Carter was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault shortly after the accident happened about 4:30 p.m. Thursday when he was traveling north on Dobson Road, according to Mesa police. The driver of the truck was traveling west on Emelita and attempting to turn when Carter's van crashed into them.

It was not immediately known whether the driver of the truck was a man or a woman, but the person had to be extricated from the vehicle before being transported to the hospital, police said.
