Are you a leader? Do you thrive on helping others in times of crisis or emergency? You may be just who the Chandler Fire Department is looking for.
CFD is asking those residents interested in helping their neighbors in the event of a disaster or other emergency to consider applying to be on its Community Emergency Response Teams, also known as CERT.
CERT members will get specialized training from the fire department and other agencies, and the basic CERT course will teach participants how to identify and anticipate potential hazards, turn off utilities, put out small fires, apply basic medical aid and assist emergency first responders. The course will also cover how to develop a family emergency communication plan and how to assist family and neighbors in a variety of situations.
More than 500 Chandler residents have completed the free training. Groups participate in drills at least once a year and receive monthly training classes and updates to initial training. Upon completion, CERT members will get a vest, helmet and ID.
Classes are scheduled from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. June 22, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 23. To register, call (480) 782-2116. More information is online at www.chandleraz.gov/fire.
