A couple days before Thanksgiving, at about 5 a.m. people start to form a line that snakes through the parking lot at Matthew’s Crossing Food Bank in Chandler to wait for an emergency grocery box with all the fixings for a Thanksgiving dinner. The food bank usually hands out yams, cranberry sauce, cakes and about 500 turkeys. But this year on Nov.20, the food bank will be short more than a hundred turkeys.

“We’re heading into a very interesting holiday situation,” said Stanley Nicpon, executive director of Matthew’s Crossing. “We need to make sure that during the holidays, nobody goes hungry and that they can focus on getting jobs and a roof over their head.”

Three turkeys have been donated, and in the face of rising food costs, the food bank scraped together money for 350 turkeys from WalMart at the store’s lowest retail price.

Matthew’s Crossing will hand out food boxes starting at 9 a.m. on Nov.20 at 1368 N. Arizona Ave., Chandler. They will accept food donations from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Nov. 19.
