On the same day the Republican presidential primary candidates will debate in Mesa, the C-SPAN Campaign 2012 Bus will roll into the East Valley to give high school and college students a closer look into the race for the White House.

The bus will stop at Chandler's Hamilton High School -- as well as the campus' public library site -- on Wednesday, when visitors can learn how to plug into the cable network's political and educational resources through social media. Students can learn more about key state races, the electoral college and how to access video of candidates and campaign events.

Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett will also be on hand in Chandler stop before the bus heads Thursday to stops in Scottsdale and downtown Phoenix.

The high-tech bus helps students better understand how government works, said Cox Communications spokeswoman Andrea Katsenes. Cox is sponsoring the visit.

The bus comes to the Valley every couple of years and is a big draw, she said.

"We're very flattered that they came to Arizona, particularity during our presidential primary time and during the time when we have the debates here," Katsenes said.

The 6 p.m. Wednesday debate will be broadcast live on CNN from the Mesa Arts Center. Arizona's primary is Feb 28.

C-SPAN has had a bus travel across the nation since 1993 as part of the the non-profit, non-partisan cable network's mission to show federal government proceedings and public affairs programming.

Three Valley stops are planned and open to the public:

  • 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hamilton High School/Hamilton Public Library, 3700 S. Arizona Ave.
  • 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday at Paradise Valley Community College, 34250 N. 60th Street, Scottsdale.
  • 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at the Burton Barr Central Library, 1221 N. Central Ave., Phoenix
