A Hartford Elementary School worker is asking for donations for a Chandler family that lost three of its members in a car crash Tuesday. One of those killed was a student at the school.
Nico Pacheco, 26; her son, Jose Pacheco, 11; and her nephew, Jose Antonio Pacheco, 21, died in a crash in Camargo, Chihuahua, Mexico, after a tire blew out on the 2002 Lincoln Navigator she was driving, said her brother, Armando Miranda.
Charlie and Melissa Pacheco, Jose’s brother and sister, and Jose Pacheco Sr. also were in the vehicle.
On Saturday, Charlie and Melissa Pacheco were still at a hospital in Mexico, Miranda said. Jose Pacheco Sr. was not injured.
Jose Pacheco was a fifthgrader at Hartford and "an awesome baseball player," said Sylvia Encina, a clerk at the school.
"He had lots of friends at school," she said. "He had a beautiful smile and was a clean-cut kid."
Encina is asking for donations to help pay for funeral and medical expenses for the family. "My goal is at least $25,000," she said.
The death of Jose Pacheco prompted the Chandler Unified School District to send 12 counselors to the school to speak to students Wednesday. "A lot of kids came up and spoke with them," Encina said.
Some of the students made cards for the family Wednesday, and there was a prayer group in the evening.
A memorial service is being planned for Tuesday or Wednesday, Encina said.
Donations can be made to the Hartford School PTO General Fund, 700 N. Hartford, Chandler, 85225.
Sylvia Encino can be reached at (480) 812-6700 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on school days.
