Chandler residents will soon see an increase in their property taxes.
On July 9, the Chandler Unified School District’s Governing Board approved an increase from $.50 to $29.10 per $100,000 assessed value on a home.
According to the Maricopa County Assessor’s Office, the 2015 median assessed value for a Chandler home is $186,700, which means the average homeowner within the school district’s boundaries will see an $54.33 increase.
The tax hike will raise a little more than $6.1 million, which will go into the adjacent ways fund that pays for the building of streets, sidewalks and other projects.
“By law, the board can go on ahead and tax the taxpayers if we have to build streets around the schools,” said Chandler Unified School District CFO Joel Wirth. “I can’t tax (taxpayers) for anything else without their votes.”
The district is building a seventh- through 12th-grade school and a kindergarten through sixth-grade school at Power and Queen Creek roads. The money from the tax increase, which goes into effect for the 2014-15 school year, will go toward the streets for those two schools, which do not have names yet and are scheduled to open in July 2015.
The elementary school will accommodate around 900 students while the secondary school will hold approximately 1,500 students.
As the district continues to grow, more new schools are needed. The last two schools to be completed in the district were Carlson Elementary and Arizona College Prep-Erie Campus, which opened in 2012.
“There is also big demand for our Chandler Traditional Academies, so we are constructing the elementary to meet the expectations of the community and to accommodate growth,” said district spokesperson Terry Locke.
