A man in a wheelchair was treated and released from Chandler Regional Medical Center after police say a 26-year-old man beat him over the head with his fists and a piece of the wheelchair before two bystanders detained him on Saturday.

Police say that Raymond Gonzales, 26, while under the influence of alcohol, walked up to the 66-year-old man in the wheelchair in the 100 block of East Elgin Street and started hitting him over the head with his fists. Gonzales then broke off a footrest from the wheelchair and struck the victim with it, according to a court document.

When police arrived on the scene, they saw two bystanders holding Gonzales by each arm and noticed the man in the wheelchair had a swollen face and a cut on his arm and hands, the document said.

Gonzales told police that he struck the victim out of fear.
