Chandler planning and zoning commissioners voted 4-1 Wednesday to recommend a use permit for a Hindu temple proposed in a residential neighborhood near Dobson and Galveston roads.

The Sri Venkata Krishna congregation has asked the city to allow it to build a 7,500-square-foot religious and cultural center that will resemble a 12th century Hindu temple in Udupi, India.

The recommendation was made over the objections of many neighbors who said the temple will clash with the residential area and set a dangerous precedent for future developers to bring in other nonresidential projects.

The recommendation now goes to the Chandler City Council, which will ultimately decide the case at its June 28 meeting.
