With the 2014-15 school year about to start, the Kyrene School District is hosting its Meet the Teacher night to decrease any first-day nerves.

Meet the Teacher night not only gives parents the opportunity to speak with their child’s teacher prior to the school year, it also provides incoming parents and students a chance to explore the school’s facilities and learn more about extracurricular activities.

For schools such as Kyrene Altadeña Middle School, it’s an opportunity to combine both Meet the Teacher and curriculum night into one event.

Curriculum night is similar to the Meet the Teacher event, but allows parents and students to know what the educational expectations are throughout the school term.

During Altadeña’s combined event, teachers will conduct a 10- to 15-minute presentation about classroom expectations and go through the school-year schedule.

Nancy Corner, principal at Altadeña, said the event gives parents and students a sense of relief before the start of the school year.

“I think one of the most important parts is that teachers are getting to explain what they do with the students for the first week of school and teach them the lay of the land,” she said. “I think it really relieves a lot of the anxiety that students and parents have before school starts.”

Corner added that Meet the Teacher/Curriculum night has been highly popular in past years, with nearly 80 to 90 percent of the school’s population attending.

“One of the best things is just seeing the students and seeing how excited they are to start the school year,” she said. “It’s just a really fun evening.”

Michael Lamp, principal at Kyrene de la Estrella Elementary School, said Estrella will not combine its curriculum night with Meet the Teacher, but will have the former three weeks into the school year.

During Estrella’s Meet the Teacher night, parents will gather in the school’s multipurpose room to receive information from the school’s Parent Teacher Organization to transportation.

“This is the first opportunity parents have to know who the teacher is,” Lamp said. “Typically, it’s a night with a lot of smiles and people excited about the school year starting.”

Elementary and middle schools will host their Meet the Teacher event on separate days; middle schools’ Meet the Teacher will occur 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 30, and elementary schools’ event will be 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 31.

Parents are advised to arrive a half-hour before the event in order to ensure getting a spot to park.

Community members might experience heavy traffic around school areas and are advised to seek different routes during Meet the Teacher night.

Kyrene will begin the 2014-15 school year on Monday, Aug. 4.
