A memorial service for Eddie Basha is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, April 6, at the ASU Gammage auditorium in Tempe.
Basha, the grocery king who had run the Bashas’ family of stores since he took over the family business at age 31, died this week at 75.
Basha, who attended Chandler High School and kept the company’s headquarters in the East Valley city, was a staunch supporter of advancing Arizona’s public education efforts; he served on the Chandler Unified School District governing board, the Arizona Board of Education and the Arizona Board of Regents -- ABOR manages the state’s three public universities; two schools in the Chandler district have been named after the Basha family as well, including Basha Elementary School and Basha High School, the latter specifically in honor of the late East Valley businessman.
The Basha family has asked that in lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember Basha send donations to either the charity of their choice, or to one of Eddie Basha’s favorites:
• St. Vincent de Paul; P.O. Box 13600; Phoenix, AZ 85002
• The Salvation Army; 2707 E. Van Buren St.; Phoenix, AZ 85008
• First Things First; 4000 N. Central Ave., Suite 800; Phoenix, AZ 85012
• Adelante Foundation; P.O. Box 488; Chandler, AZ 85244
ASU Gammage is located at 1200 S. Forest Ave., on the Tempe campus of Arizona State University.
The memorial service may be available for viewing off site via Web cast; if so, a link will be made available after April 3 at www.asu.edu.
