American City & County magazine has recognized Chandler and Gilbert's collaboration on a joint water treatment plant, saving each community millions of dollars.
The two cities are among the magazine's designation of 11 "American Crown Communities" nationwide. The award was announced Dec. 18 and is presented annually in recognition of outstanding leadership in local government.
The magazine recognized the municipalities for their construction of the recently completed $88 million Santan Vista Water Treatment Plant, citing it as an example of municipal leadership in a time of financial constraints. Each community is entitled to 50 percent of the plant capacity and saved an estimated $22 million dollars in capital investment compared with the cost of building separate facilities.
Recipients of the annual awards are selected by the editors of American City & County based on nominations submitted by the magazine's audience, municipal leaders, and associations. Entries are judged on uniqueness, short- and long-term value to the community, and effective/innovative financing.
