Miss work, get fired. That's what happened to 12 workers at a Chandler Pei Wei (pay way) restaurant after they failed to show up May 29.
The 12 took the day off to protest against Arizona's strict immigration enforcement law.
Pei Wei spokesman Peter Marino said the 12 violated an established company policy by failing to give notice and choosing not to show up.
The 12 work as cooks, dishwashers and busers. Of the 12, ten are men and two are women.
The fired workers were nonunion. However, an organization called the Industrial Workers of the World is giving moral and financial support to the fired workers.
The union accuses Pei Wei of selective enforcement of its attendance policy.

When I want Chinese, Pei Wei will get my vote !
Nice to see some business with the courage to enforce basic policies without a PC hammer.
"No call? You're fired." Is SOP in almost every HR Handbook. Unless you can bring a verifiable note to prove your inability to work/call was beyond your control, you can go stand in the Unemployment line.
Those little (Sp: Bic*hos) spoiled vermin
may find themselves ineligible for Unemployment since they (in effect) "Willingly abandoned their jobs".

The article states they "took the day off" but what does that mean? Did they request the day off or not call in and not show up for work? There's a big difference there. If I do a no call no show I'd get fired too regardless of what did or where I went that day.

This story's title seems to be misleading (read: lie to get peoples attention).
They did not get fired for protesting, they got fired because they didn't bother to show up for work. I would be fired for not showing up to work, most people would. 12 people not showing up for work would probably close the restaurant for the day.
BTW- PeiWei needs to check their employees for legal status if 12 are leaving to go protest.

AZ Republic has a better article. The 12 didn't "take the day off". First they requested the day off, then when they didn't get it off, close to half the crew did a no show no call. Most jobs I've ever worked has the clause that no show, no call can cause termination.
The entitlement attitude bears its head once again....

I think I'll take a trip to Chandler to support the Manager's decision...

Given the political attitudes of these former employees and the fac that these attitudeds impacted how they approached their employment, it would be wise to pay attention to the establishments one eats at and to monitor the food being prepared.

Pei Wei, Pei Wei Pei Wei !!!!!!
It sounds like they need more intelligent workers!
No call No show = NO JOB
anyway, even if they all put in for the day off, a business can't allow half the staff to all have the same day off, I've been turned down on day off requests more then once, because it wasn't feasible to the company to let me have time off on the day requested! I went to work, still have my job!
